Retreat from the world in our “Garden of Eden”, relax and refresh your soul in our “swimming hole”, or practice Yoga with a view of Rio Naranjo. Fall asleep in a hammock to the sounds of the Scarlet Macaws and the fragrance of the Ylang Ylang. Take a walk in the bamboo jungle and try to spot iguanas, titi monkeys and hummingbirds. There’s plenty to enjoy at Finca Amanecer.
Finca Amanecer is located on a rural dirt road with scenery so fantastic, local ATV tours charge $95 to experience this “adventure”. You can appreciate the same amazing beauty during the 40-minute bus ride from Quepos for only a dollar. (My Daddy always said: Sell the sizzle.) Charles McKenna enjoyed the experience while biking from the Arctic Circle to Tierra del Fuego. He says: “You can relax and enjoy the sounds of nature while those tourists stay in noisy overcrowded hotels in smelly Quepos”.

He’s right. Walking down our main “sendero” (path) and experiencing the grandeur of the towering hardwood trees will be the highlight of your day. A little further, the pleasant sound of our creek will have you take off your shoes and dip your toes, and before you know it, you’ll feel comforted and at peace. If you’re lucky, you might notice some agitation in the trees: it’s the titi monkeys roaming the canopy in families and making their typical screeching sound. On the way back to the farm, you’ll delight in the organic spices: vanilla, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, turmeric and cardamom, and tropical fruits: pineapples, mangos, avocado, oranges, bananas and then there are the flowers and their fragrances!
A very important part of Finca Amanecer is our emphasis on sustainability and spiritual openness. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free meals are provided, the entire farm is tobacco-free, and clothing is optional. The building and grounds provide examples of sustainable design: solar clothes dryer, a “Tico semi-automatic washer”, recycled and native materials. Here you’ll get the Bali or Hawaiian feel, as there is no need for glass in the windows, and you’ll enjoy the sound of the rain on the tin roofs. It’s all about leaving a smaller footprint and creating a greater harmony with Mother Earth.

Finca Amanecer is perfect for students desiring Spanish and cultural immersion, as Londres is a small pueblo where 95% of the population speaks only Spanish. You might even want to volunteer and spend the afternoon at the High School to give kids an opportunity to practice their conversational English! There are three restaurants in Londres and 2 Mini-supers, all within walking distance. It’s also a great place to meet other adventurous travelers and plan the rest of your stay. Your hostess Elena co-authored “Discovering Costa Rica with GPS” in 1996, and she will help with all your travel plans.
Across the street, Rio Naranjo offers class III/IV rafting from May to November, and from Christmas to Easter it becomes a lazy river perfect for swimming. A short hike will take you to the gorgeous Bridal Veil Falls, where swimming is also a possibility. And 40 minutes away is the world-famous Manuel Antonio National Park where adventure tours abound.
You’ll love it so much that you’ll want to stay! And what if you do? Who wouldn’t like to live with like-minded people, in a climate and at an elevation where you do not need heating, nor air conditioning, in a country with no snow, no army, and almost no taxes? Our intention is definitely to transform a small ecolodge into a environmentally-sound spiritual ecovillage.
There’s a reason we chose the dragonfly as our totem. Dragonflies experience during their lives an impressive process of metamorphosis, beginning in the water, then surfacing and finally learning to fly. They are a powerful symbol of transformation, of new life, of letting go of old cycles and beliefs, of finding your true inner expression and beauty. Our lives and our beliefs have changed so much since we started the Finca Amanecer project. Come check it out as a volunteer for a few weeks, and stay forever!
